Robert Kircher: I'm Robert Kircher, and I'm program director for the School Counseling Program at the USM The role of a school counselor is really varied, depending upon the day, the time of the year. But the role of a school counselor is both as an educator and as a professional counselor.
The students seem to have a whole lot more needs right now. And so it's critical to increase the number of school counselors. It would be a great time to become a school counselor. Another reason that teachers might consider, moving to school counseling is because they have a chance to impact the whole school rather than just a classroom of students. School counselors do have training in how to create systemic change. And many teachers are looking for that.
I think the uniqueness of our program comes in our flexibility. They can continue to have a full-time job and during the program because our classes are in the evenings. They can also work to an option of within the first 24 hours that they complete, after the first 24 hours, they can be eligible to have a provisional license in the state of Kansas and be hired as a school counselor at that point – with just half of the program completed.
We would hope that that our students, potential students, would really give us a true consideration and see what we have to offer. I think we can do you good.
